Study Asses Student Costs in Thüringen, Germany

As so-called alternative schools, most of these receive some state funding. According to a new study from the Institute for Structural Politics and Economic Promotion in Halle, however, this funding amounts to significantly less than is allotted to cover the financial need of a student at a state school.
Concretely, the subsidies offered by the state cover only 49 to 61 percent of actual costs – instead of the 80 percent mandated by the Thüringen state education law. This was explained by a state working group for independent schools (Landesarbeitsgemeinschaft der freien Schulen, LAG) in a presentation of its study results at the end of August. The working group commissioned the study, which was financed by the Software AG Foundation, to call attention to the unfair financing gap between state schools and independent schools.
